Rayna: Does God still speak through dreams today?

Karon: I believe the bible from cover to cover. Even though the old testament is a foreshadowing of the new testament the old testament has patterns and sequences where God spoke to them. It shows His character and as Christians we want to know the many facets that are the character of God.

If God is speaking to the people in the bible in a dream, for example King Solomon, and God has not changed, then we can know that He’s still speaking the same way today. King Solomon received wisdom through a dream (1 Kings 3:5-15). In the new testament it says that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8). The basic character of God is not going to change. That is why I believe so heavily in dreams. I didn’t even know any of this seven years ago. To answer your question, yes, God definitely still speaks through dreams today.

When I first started learning about God speaking to me through dreams I would pray for a dream from God before I went to bed. I would ask God to show me what was in my heart because I had brokenness I needed to deal with. Of course He answered! I was just dumbfounded by how He answered my prayer and spoke to me so intimately. The first time I asked God to show me what was in my heart He showed me I had fear.

I spent six weeks working on getting the fear out of my heart and dealing with those wounds. At the time I didn’t have a background for inner healing so this was all new to me. I was in a class for emotional healing but I had just started learning all these things. It was a lot to handle at first, but I kept going. I’m going to be honest and tell you that it was hard to see all these hurts in my heart.

I was kind of afraid to pray that prayer again but I did. Then God gave me a dream where I had rejection. I dealt with that too but it was a long time before I prayed this same prayer again because it was some heavy stuff but it was worth it.

After all that, the Lord gave me a dream where He read me a love letter. Then, I got up and wrote a love letter back to Him. He showed me I had LOVE in my heart. You know your heart is healing when you get a response from God of faith, hope, or love. You see, He was cleaning out my heart. The love letter dream was a confirmation that I now had more love in my heart than fear, rejection, etc. It was very beautiful. God made such a radical believer out of me that He still speaks through dreams.

To this day, the things He shows me through my dreams have been incredible. He wants to take you to your secret place to teach you more about Him and His ways.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2, NKJV

Rayna: How did God start teaching you about dreams?

Karon: Seven years ago, I didn’t have the faintest idea about dreams. My dreams started with emotional healing then went to intercessory dreams. Intercessory dreams are when you dream of someone and the dream tells you how you need to pray for them. But before getting intercessory dreams God gave me many dreams to heal my emotions. God wants to develop the gift of dreaming in you so He can give you more and more of Him. Remember Heaven can’t move until we pray.

What we steward we get more of. I put a pad and pencil next to my bed and I would pray before going to sleep to ask for dreams. (Quick tip: We included THAT prayer at the end of this blog post!) As soon as I wake up I write down the dream with as much detail as I can. It’s easy to forget what happened in a dream so writing it down as soon as you wake up will give you the best recollection.

Rayna: Are dreams an invitation to know more of God? Why or why not?

Interview with Karon Walsh on Does God still speak through dreams today

Karon: The more that you fall in love with Jesus, the more you want to know of him. You have to let your walls and barriers down and say God speak to me any way You want. For example, if you get in the car and you hear a song and you know God is speaking to you through that song receive that as a word from Him and prayerfully look up the lyrics.

Realize there are no coincidences with God. It’s a God thing! When we start letting our guard down and letting God take down the boundaries, we will hear from Him in nature and other various ways. A relationship with Jesus is just like any other relationship. You have to let your walls down to become closer to that person. As you do this it then becomes a God moment. As you engage God this way you will encounter Him more and more!

Once you learn to let your guard down and lay down your safety mechanisms, you will experience God in MANY ways. God speaking to you through your dreams is only one of the millions of ways He speaks.

If God is speaking to me through dreams and I’m not paying attention, I’m not going to get more dreams. Just like if He is speaking to me through music and I’m not paying attention and looking at the lyrics and pursuing that relationship with God by asking questions, then I’m not going to get more.

If you look at a jewel it has so many facets. This is how God is. He has many facets to Him. I can’t imagine how many facets God has! But, dreams are one of the major facets of Him.

“A dream from God is treasure longing to be discovered, wisdom and understanding waiting to be found.”

Teresa Ward, from her book “Gateway to Dreams”

God wants our eyes on Him. Listen to this. It is VERY IMPORTANT. When you have a dream, it is an invitation to encounter from God to encounter Him. Every single dream is an encounter. God is trying to speak to you in some form or fashion. Go to God and ask Him what the dream means.

Before you ask other people, ask God to help you with the dream interpretation. Jesus wants you to encounter Him because He wants to know you more. You do that by starting a conversation with him. Now, it’s not wrong to ask someone to help you with a dream but do your due diligence with God first. Ask God first because He was the giver of the dream and it’s your way of honoring Him.

Every dream is a gift. A demonic dream (a nightmare) is an invitation for healing. The invite is from God even though it was a demonic dream. Take the verse Romans 8:28. Sometimes there is something in our heart that we need to have cleaned up and it might come through a really bad dream. The fear dream I had was very scary but God used that dream to clean up my heart. He was drawing me to a deeper place of intimacy.

So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together to fit into God’s perfect plan of bringing good into our lives, for we are his lovers who have been called to fulfill his designed purpose.

Romans 8:28, The Passion Translation

Rayna: How do I know what my dreams mean? How do I figure out the dream interpretation?

Karon: Teresa Ward recommends in her book, “Gateway to Dreams,” to have a cup of T.E.A. as a tool to find the meaning of your dream.

T – Titles or Turning Points – the key here is to make your title as long as possible as you describe your dream; include adjectives and adverbs
E – Emotion – ask yourself how you felt in the dream; were you scared? happy? relaxed? anxious?
A – Action – what was the action in your dream? Were you running? Maybe God wants to heal what you were running from

Sometimes I have gotten the entire meaning of my dream just by writing out the title. But the main thing you want to remember is to pray about your dream. God is going to speak to you in a parabolic language. He will use colloquialisms and symbols that are familiar and personal to you. God will use little phrases you use in your everyday life because He knows you so intimately. He will speak to you in your language with your tone and your sense of humor. If anything is odd in a dream, where you say, “this was so weird!” then your radar should go up.

You should definitely focus on the odd parts of your dream because this is where God is trying to get your attention. Remember Jesus taught in parables. Parables use symbols to teach you the meaning of deeper things. Your dreams are also given to you in symbols.

Try to get a new perspective and look at your dream as a symbol instead of literal. For example, if you dream of losing your purse or wallet it may mean you have lost your purpose or lost your identity or lost something important to you in your life right now. It generally will not mean that you are going to lose your actual purse or wallet in the near future.

Often, if you log your dream God may just want you to sit on it. He may be planting a seed and He will grow you to get the interpretation later on. Always log and date your dreams. For someone just starting, the main thing is to start talking to God because the dream itself is an invitation into relationship.

What do my dreams means image with bed in background.

“Dreams are almost always metaphorical representations of a spiritual reality or truth.”

John Paul Jackson in his book, Top 20 Dreams

When you write down your dream you are saying to God, “I value this dream and I want more of You.” You see, God wants to plant a seed in your heart. He will use the dream as the seed and He will grow you to know the meaning of your dream.

Another important tool is to log and date your dreams with as much detail as you possible. Then, start talking to God. Prayer is just a conversation with God. The dream is His invitation to you to dive deeper into your relationship with Him.

If you really can’t figure out a dream start with the basics. Ask yourself the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the dream then write those things down. From there, you will uncover the meaning. Be sure to check out the Dream Resources blog post which includes book recommendations and details on how to seek God for the meaning of your dream.

You want to ask yourself, “What is going on in my life that is going on in this dream?” There are no coincidences with God.

Here’s a good example. My sister called me and said I have this dream where water is coming up to my house and my house is getting flooded. I immediately asked her, “Where do you feel “hemmed in” in your life? Where are you feeling trapped?” From there she was able to pinpoint the issue God wanted to heal in her life.

Dreams will give you an aha moment.

Rayna: How would you apply the dream interpretation to your life?

Karon: You apply the dream interpretation by taking it to the Lord in prayer and asking Him to heal that area of your life or start changing your behavior in that area. Take the scripture that says “take every thought captive” because it is applicable here. It all starts with a thought. Everything goes back to your thoughts and God’s principles. One of the best ways for God to correct us is through a dream. You may get instruction or warning in a dream. By letting your barriers down, God will give you deeper type dreams.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV

Dreams generally come from your soul, from God or from the demonic realm. God can use all of them. The dream interpretation will come to you through a surrendered heart.

God can use the soul (which is your mind, will and emotions) and demonic dreams as a mirror of what is going on in you. As we take the walls down and let God work on our hearts, we receive healing.  A lot of times, especially in the beginning, your dream interpretation will usually have to do with something God wants to heal in your heart.

Dreams are a gift from the Lord and we should ask for more of them!

Rayna: Can we give the readers a prayer to pray to get them dreaming?

Karon: Yes, of course! Let’s pray:

Lord,
I ask you to speak to me in my dreams. Lord, I want to know you and your heart and I ask that you speak to me through a dream tonight. I ask you to reveal your ways, your purposes and your direction for my life.
Amen
