It is a relief to know we can bring our emotional pain to Him in prayer.
My prayer is for you to be encouraged as you read through each of these powerful prayers and activate your faith to receive the healing love of Jesus. Let the power of the Holy Spirit move on your heart and receive your healing.
What The Word of God Says About Emotional Healing And Mental Health
The word of God has so much to say about emotional wellness and mental health. The bible is such a practical guide for the hard times of life. As we look at scripture, open your heart to receive healing.
Let’s look at what God has to say about a wounded heart.
- Psalm 34:18 – The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (NIV)
- Psalm 147:3 – He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (NIV)
- Psalm 56:8-9 – You have recorded my troubles. You have kept a list of my tears. Aren’t they in your records? On the day I call for help, my enemies will be defeated. I know that God is on my side. (NCV)
- John 16:22 – So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. (NIV)
The word of God says that He is close to us when we have a broken heart and He saves us when we feel crushed. He heals us and binds up our emotional wounds. Father God has recorded all your troubles and He keeps a record of every tear you have cried. When we cry out for God’s help He already knows what we’re going through.
Scripture also says that as we call on Father God to help us, our enemies will be defeated because He is on our side. We can come to Jesus Christ in our time of grief and He will see to it that we rejoice again. Now that’s what I call encouragement!
Everyone Has A Need Of Emotional Healing
Emotional pain is a part of life. No one is exempt from getting their feelings hurt and I think everyone will agree that it is no fun. The silver lining is that we serve a God who heals our hearts and makes all things new. Your negative emotions are a guide to show you where you are hurting. Give them the space they deserve. Allow yourself to feel your emotional pain, then hand it over to Jesus for emotional healing.
Identifying Emotional Pain
Once we identify our emotional pain, whether it is sadness, depression, fear, anxiety, or anything else, we have taken the first step toward healing. Acknowledging the pain in our hearts and addressing that it needs to be healed is a vital step in your emotional well-being journey.
Take time to sit with your emotions and articulate to yourself exactly what you are feeling. A great way to do this is through journaling.

5 Heartfelt Prayers For Emotional Healing And Mental Health
Let’s dive into these heartfelt prayers for emotional healing and mental health. Each of these prayers are based on my emotional wellness journey where I went from desperation to victory. You can read my emotional healing story here. I love that we can go to Jesus in the difficult times of our lives and ask Him to heal our hearts. Let’s pray and believe for His miraculous healing for every area of our hearts.
Prayer #1 – To Heal Painful Memories
Heavenly Father, I place my heart in Your loving, capable hands. Just as it says in Psalm 139: 1-4 (TPT), I say to You: Lord, you know everything there is to know about me. You perceive every movement of my heart and soul, and you understand my every thought before it even enters my mind. [3-4] You are so intimately aware of me, Lord. You read my heart like an open book and you know all the words I’m about to speak before I even start a sentence! You know every step I will take before my journey even begins. And, because of how well You know me, You know every painful memory that runs through my mind. I lift up these memories to You, and I ask You to heal each one of them. Show me the root of where each memory began, Lord, so I can go back to that place and seek healing and redemption. I choose to stand in Your steadfast love and receive Your healing power. I pray this in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen
Pour out all your worries and stress upon him and leave them there, for he always tenderly cares for you.1 Peter 5:7 TPT
Prayer #2 – For Inner Peace
Lord Jesus, I ask that You would enter in and calm my heart. Give me peace of mind when I feel unrest and unease. As the feelings of fear and anxiety surface in my heart, which are the opposite of peace, I ask You to pour Your peace into my every circumstance in every possible way. Teach me how to receive Your perfect love because, in 1 John 4:18, You said that perfect love drives out fear. I choose to walk in peace and receive Your perfect love. Help me to trust You in every area of my heart. Teach me how to position my heart to walk in inner peace. I ask You for inner peace today and for the rest of my days. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
Now, may the Lord himself, the Lord of peace, pour into you his peace in every circumstance and in every possible way. The Lord’s tangible presence be with you all.2 Thessalonians 3:16 TPT
Prayer #3 – To Heal Emotional Wounds
Dear Lord, You know the wounds of my heart. Help me to open my heart so that I can fully embrace my emotional wounds to receive deep healing. I give You permission today to search my heart and show me how to pursue healing for each emotional wound. I ask You to guide me to Your truth so that I no longer believe any lies regarding what happened to me. Recall to me each situation where my emotions were wounded. Show me where You were, Jesus, in that moment. What do you have to say about what happened to me? (Open your heart and listen for Holy Spirit to respond). I ask You, Holy Spirit, to heal my emotions and set me free. You said in your word (John 8:32, TPT) that if I embrace truth it will release true freedom in my life. Show me how to embrace Your truth about my thoughts and my emotions. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
For if you embrace the truth, it will release true freedom into your lives.John 8:32 TPT
Prayer #4 – For A Broken Heart
Dear Jesus, I come before You today with a broken heart. My expectations and hopes in this area of my life are shattered because of what I am facing today, My only hope is in You, Jesus. Because of Your great love for me, I come to You today asking for comfort and emotional healing. You said in Psalm 147:3 that You heal the wounds of every shattered heart. My heart is broken before You and I humbly ask You to heal me. You know the difficult emotions that run through my heart and I ask You for relief, practical coping mechanisms, and serenity of mind. I need Your divine help to heal my heart. Strengthen me and help me, Jesus, as I face this emotional pain. I choose to believe the word of God over my feelings today. I ask You to uphold me with your righteous right hand. Allow me to feel You near, Lord God. I open my heart to encounter You in new ways and I receive Your healing in Jesus’ name. Amen
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.Isaiah 41:10 NIV
Prayer #5 – To Overcome Negative Thoughts
Dear God, My mind is running rampant with negative thinking which gives me a heavy heart. Sometimes I cannot see anything positive even though I know there must be something. Help me to have a grateful heart and to overcome these negative thoughts. I give You permission to show me where these negative thoughts originated in my life. I ask You to transform me by the renewing of my mind. Change how I think so I will learn to know Your will for my life. I choose to believe that Your will is good and pleasing and perfect for my life. Give me a different perspective, Jesus, and change the way I think. Heal my heart in the way that only You can. I pray for these things to manifest in my life in the name of Jesus. Amen
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.Romans 12:2 NLT
The Power of Prayer For Painful Emotions
As you seek Jesus in prayer during times of emotional pain, I want to encourage you again to embrace your emotions. Painful emotions can be a powerful tool for navigating your heart. I like to think of my emotional pain as a compass that shows me where to direct my prayers.
When something hurts me I will stop and ask myself, “What am I feeling? Why am I responding this way?” The answer will be my key to determining how to pray and what to pray. If at first you don’t know the answer to the root of your pain, sit in the question until the answer comes. These 5 emotional well-being prayers will help you to get there.
