The biggest lie I have believed is that I should run away from my pain, avoid my pain, not talk about or deal with my pain. OMG! I cannot believe how much this lie stole from my life! And, everywhere we turn today the messages we are fed through social media, billboards, and television are all geared toward feeling good in the moment. We hear things like, “Do what makes you happy” and “Let go of your past.”
But, I do not believe that we can truly let go of our past until we face it. We need to give our hearts permission to feel the pain then receive healing from Father God. Our past is part of us and we have to deal with it. Since our lives are not black and white we have to ponder deeper. The reality is that our hearts are FULL of gray areas where we haven’t even touched the surface of how we really feel. If it was so easy to “just choose happiness” then why are so many people unhappy?

Biggest Truth #1
I believe with all my heart that one cannot experience true happiness until they have dealt with their emotional pain. This means dealing with each lie we believe. I’m not saying that we always should focus on our darkest moments, but I am saying that we have to bring every lie to truth. Some lies you believe are so normal to you, that you don’t even realize you are being tormented.
If you have been hurt in any area of your life, allow yourself to look at it. Allow yourself to feel it and deal with the pain. Because once you give pain its moment then you can move forward. Why? Because there is a part of you that was broken when the hurt happened; when you were betrayed or lied to or ridiculed. And, that part of yourself deserves to be heard.
Think of it this way. Jesus was there when you were hurt. He saw everything and He wants to heal the pain in your heart, but He can’t heal you unless you’re willing to go there with Him.
Biggest Truth #2
Once you give your heart a chance to process the pain and you ask Jesus to enter the scene, He can heal you. I now see my pain as a compass that shows me where my heart is broken. We serve an amazing God who wants to heal our pain as soon as we ask. But, how can we ask for healing when we do not even know what is wrong? It begins with choosing to look at the pain.
Face The Pain
My rebuttal to the biggest lie on the planet is this. Run toward your pain like it’s your job!! Make it your business to know every aspect of your heart. Find out what makes you joyful, ambitious, curious, and everything in between. Stop hiding and let yourself out of the cages of doubt, fear, and straight up self hate. There are so many things about YOU that the world needs to see. You were created for greater things!! Your story matters. Did you hear that?
Your story matters
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 10:10, New King James Version
The thief cannot kill and destroy unless he first steals. If he already stole your past, don’t let him steal your present and your future. I want to encourage you today, as in right now, to ask Jesus into your present and your future. Start to love yourself and get to know yourself instead of running from everything that made you who you are today. You are worth knowing. You are worthy of love.
Abundant Life
Jesus came so that we may have an abundant life. That abundant life starts with facing your pain. I know that it may seem odd to equate abundance with pain, but it’s the truth! Your heart can only grow as strong as you are willing to be vulnerable. It’s in that place, in a place of vulnerability, that God is able to mold you and shape you. In our trials we are broken to be made whole by Him. Why is that? It’s because in the trial our eyes are opened to truth.
Faith Triumphs in Trouble
Romans 5:1-5, New King James Version
5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Don’t face your pain alone. Confide in a friend. Schedule an appointment with a counselor. Start writing in a journal. I want to encourage you to face whatever lie you are believing that is holding you back because on the other side of that lie is HOPE.
Biggest Truth #3
Vulnerability births strength. Don’t believe the lie that happiness is running away from your pain. True joy comes from running toward your pain, facing your pain and dealing with it. Let Jesus speak into your heart His truth about what happened and let Him heal you. As scripture says, your tribulation (pain) will produce perseverance, then character, then hope. And, hope brings so much happiness with it.
Biggest Truth #4
Face your pain. Let your story be heard. Your life is on the other side. Your greatest dreams are on the other side. I am speaking from experience. I believed the lie to “run” for too long.
As I got still and faced my truth, the truth that I was sexually abused my entire childhood, I was set free. I also faced every lie that I believed about myself. I faced the shame and the hurt. It did not happen overnight. It was a process and it really hurt to remember it all, but let me tell you…it was worth it!!!
I invited Jesus in and He began to heal my heart. He gave me truth for every lie I believed. I am in awe every day of the healing I have experienced so far. My life is now so full of joy! He can do the same for you. Let’s pray together.
Let’s Pray
Father God,
I lift up this sweet person reading this prayer and I ask for you to equip them with courage. Courage to face the pain of their life and strength to get to the other side. I ask You to bring them a friend whom they can speak to about their pain.
And, more than anything, I ask You to begin to heal their pain. I ask that You would open their eyes to see and their ears to hear Your truth. I ask that You would bring truth to their situation because Your truth sets us free.
Release Your love in a whole new way. Let them experience true peace and joy. We invite Jesus into this situation to speak words of healing. I ask You to give each of them the courage to keep going. Show them how special they are in Your eyes.
I decree and declare that each person reading this prayer would be radically healed and set free!! I decree and declare that each person reading this prayer would receive comfort from the Holy Spirit and that they would each hear healing words from Jesus. May the peace of God reign in your life every single day.
I pray this in Jesus’s Name.
Amen.
